The front of the ancient port which has always been the border between the city and the port, has been modified many times in the last 200 years.
The edge of the oldest city stopped at the foot of the hill of Castello, leaving a free space before the beach. That space, more or less wide, has remained over the centuries as sort of backstage of the port: the busy space between the ships and the backdrops on the ground floors of the houses. Today, the transformations of modernity, with its arcades and traffic, mark the axis parallel to the sea, but the comb of the alleys, that resettle in the deepest heart of the ancient city, is still there, available to the curious visitor.
