The first building was commissioned by Martino Doria in 1125. Martino used the family land near the Cathedral and just outside the city walls, a strategic location for the Doria clan, who were professional tax collectors. The church was intentionally dedicated to San Matteo, a tax collector himself, to honour the tasks of the family who saw a great predecessor in him. The church was completely rebuilt in 1278 with a new Gothic style that characterises all the buildings overlooking the square.
