Of Barnaba da Modena
Among the pictorial treasures of the church there are two gold-background madonnas, one by Nicolò da Voltri and one called "of the milk" by Barnaba da Modena, a painter who replicated the subject on many occasions, in the second half of the 1300s. This one in S. Donato, for example, has a "sister" exposed in the Louvre. In both of them there is a similar looks to the visitor and the same way of warmly and tenderly holding the child. The French examples still maintain the gold background, lost in the Genoese specimen.
The breastfeeding Mary is an ancient image, present in many Gothic representations which became gradually more realistic and lively, in their looks, in their movements, initiating a progressive humanization of the sacred figure of great success.
