Lives on rubble

At the end of the war, the entire bombed area between Porta Soprana and Piazza Erbe remained devastated with rubble accumulated on the edges for over 40 years. Over time, secondary uses are formed, the children play among the piles of rubble, someone carves out a bowling alley. People re-occupy the space denied by the war. The apses of S. Donato appears free as it has never been before and the bell tower stands out. It is a landscape that will be no longer modified, and the Luzzati gardens are the solution that leaves this open space in the most ancient and densely built part of the city.

The photo, taken in 1964, shows a bowling green where the oratory of Death was located. We are behind San Donato, where today children play in the Emanuele Luzzati gardens.
