First traces of the church

At the beginning of the 11th century the church was already important. we have no previus information, but the position, on the edge of the pre-medieval city and the role it quickly assumed after 1100 suggest a pre-existing church, dedicated to Donato, a martyr from Arezzo, perhaps a point of reference for the numerous Tuscan merchants who traded in the city.

From Forma Genuae (1938) Genoa in 1000: Castle built before the Romans, the Roman grid towards the sea and the expansion of the V-X centuries towards Porta Soprana: three cities in one wall. S. Donato, assumed as already existing, is marked in red.
