A "modern" version of the medics saints

We are around 1625. Gioacchino Assereto, a painter who has always lived in Genoa, imagines Saints Cosma and Damian interposed in contemporary clothes and movements. It is a way of telling the past and the lives of the Saints that was quite widespread at the time: concerned more with consolidating Catholics around the values of the Counter-Reformation than the historical documentation of the past .

In the picture the two ancient Eastern saints are not placed in their historical and geographical context, but in a eighteenth-century environment and clothes. They act as intermediary priests of the sick to obtain the miraculous cures of the Madonna.
