An embracing coating

Benedetto Alfieri's project involves a perfect and symmetrical geometry which defines for the square a sort of uniform box based on the portico. The axis centered on the town hall is strengthened and continues along the road to Piazza Castello, already rectified in 1600. The intervention is complicated by the need to rectify or lean on parts of pre-existing buildings.

The autograph drawing (kept in the historical archive of Turin) highlights the parts of the pre-existing ground and marks a filter portico on via Milano (never built), symmetrical to that on via Garibaldi.
