The ducal architect

The Duke Charles Emmanuel I commissioned the architect Charles of Castellamonte to design the new expansion and fortifications south of the city. The idea of creating a homogeneous district that must correspond to the social needs of the new population and at the same time represent the importance reached by the city and the duchy takes root. The first example of this new urban and architectural concept was the cut of the Via Nuova inside the ancient urban fabric, with the realization of the curtains of uniform facades of the six blocks, made by Vitozzi. The new enlargement is the ideal continuation of this previous intervention.

The press shows the architect Carlo di Castellamonte intent on illustrating to Duke Carlo Emanuele I the project for the construction of the walls and the new enlargement to the south of the city.
