The modern city respects the space of the ancient port
The function of union between port and city of the Piazza and the Via, lasts well beyond the operational needs: it is a place that everyone in Genoa knows and that is not identified by the morphology of the buildings, but by the spaces of relationship codified by secular uses.
In the photo of 1962 the space that a few years later is occupied by the elevated road, is still free and empty of cars, which instead clog the road. It’s a lung space, filled and emptied according to the needs of the port regardless of the city
