Military Quarters: the new door welcomes those coming from outside the city

In 1729 the expansion plan to the west was approved, the construction site of the Military Quarters of Juvarra, the new west gate of the city, was almost finished (see POI I Quartieri Militari). The door takes on a scenic and representative value, welcomes those who enter the city coming from the new straight street of Rivoli, through the Porta Susina. The scenography is developed along the main axis of the Via del Carmine up to the Piazza Susina, center of the rione, with function of market square and square of arms. Crossing the square, the street continues in the pre-existing street of the Senate, which will be enlarged and rectified, emphasizing the role of the backbone of the neighborhood.

In the engraving of G.B. Borra of 1749 you can see the Military Quarters and the Via del Carmine, while in the drawing of F. Juvarra of 1729 you see the project of the Piazza Susina and the new blocks that end in the west gate.
