Overlooking the sea but always behind the building that prolonged the ancient city walls, the square was positioned in a paradoxical spot. The sea is there but you can't see it: for the past two hundred years the sea moved away, buried by docks and piers, while upstream the Castello went back to its ancient shape, after centuries of abandonment.
The images, taken from the same spot (Carignano) with different lens 150 years apart, show the emptiness of the square enveloped by the buildings partly overlooking the cliff (now via della Marina).
