The market goes on
The square has been the location of the market since the Middle Ages, being one of the main service spots of the Castello neighbourhood. At the same time, the square is also marginal and the scene of trades, duels, murders, prostitution, and protests, so much so that the 19th century city guides advised foreigners to stay away from it.
In this 1950s picture, the typical groceries stalls in the area surrounding Ravecca, the main trade street of the neighbourhood that's currently permanently covered.
