During the Second World War the area of Castello and Sarzano have seriously been damaged by bombing. Many planes that targeted the port and docked ships, flying along the coast from East at low altitude, dropped their explosive load a few seconds earlier than necessary, destroying the buildings along the entire route.

In the aerial photo of 1943, the uncovered and destroyed houses are evident, especially around the square, in the lower left.
