The engraved step

Near via Santa Croce, a step engraved with an upside down Latin writing. It is an ancient altar block, probably Roman, perhaps reused in the church of S. Croce, now incorporated in the houses facing the sea. In the past, the marbles of the oldest ruins were reused for medieval monuments. Also, parts of the medieval walls were reused to build houses and so on: reuse is a practice that is certainly more than 1000 years old.

The image shows the re-use step on which it is possible to read "Excelsior" placed upside down.
