The bust of the God

On the top of the dome of the well there is the bust of Giano Bifronte, which renders the well a sort of temple dedicated to the two-faced god. Actually, what we see today is a copy of the original bust made by the stonemasons of Della Porta family in the Renaissance period. The sculpture adorned a fountain near Palazzo Ducale, then in via del Campo and therefore was not created to emphasize the relationship between Sarzano and Giano, connection that probably arose without scientific evidence in the nineteenth century but so strongly to motivate the movement of the statue on the top of the well, to which it gives its name.
