Walls enlargement
The square istrted with the walls of "Barbarossa" which in the mid-twelfth century widened towards the sea the road that used to run alongside the Carolingian walls (the current Via S.Croce), forming an almost flat widening at the edge of the Castle: for centuries the largest square inside the city walls.
In the image (Google Maps) the trace of the Carolingian walls (X century) is highlighted in red and in yellow the one of "Barbarossa" walls
