The extension was designed by Carlo Emanuele II as a major land operation, destined to profitable residential investments and to minimize religious settlements, exempted from the taxes of the Savoy government. The sudden death of the Duke led to a change of scenery: his wife Maria Giovanna Battista Nemours, second Madama Reale and new regent of the Duchy, had to support the different religious orders to obtain the support and consent. Some blocks of the Contrada di Po and the neighboring streets are destined for different orders: the Charity hospital, the Albergo di Virtù, the Congregation of the S.S. Annunziata, the convent of Sant'Antonio.
