The fountain

Before the installation of the fountain the square looked empty. It was the architect Giuseppe Crosa di Vergagni who came up with the idea of the fountain. The central basin was donated by Carlo Piaggio in memory of his father Erasmo, a shipowner, to give the city something which was going to last. A bronze tank, 11 meters wide and 36 tons heavy, was placed on April 23, 1989 in the square and still is the heart of the area.

The photo, taken immediately after the war, shows the fountain in Piazza De Ferrari, with the new buildings of the Bank of Italy and the Stock Exchange in the background. In the background, the Piacentini skyscraper.
