Physically separated from the rest of the coast, the promontory has always protected the southern part of the Ripa, the beach where boats run aground since the Roman era. Since the Middle Ages the first constructions were built on the promontory and was extended with and artificial dock towards the Lanterna, which became a big logistic platform by the end of the 1800s.
In this picture (by Google Maps) the old area of the promontory highlighted in red. The industrial dock between built between the 19th and 20th century now covers an artificial area 8 times bigger than the promontory and is separated from the city.
