A bis basin unsuitable for big ships

The natural harbour which developed in the sheltered dock is actually a shore extending with the steep canals systematically burying the excavations resumed every year. The Molo Vecchio is the only one that, properly extended, provides a depht suitable for ships with a draft greater than 5.5 m.

The harbour plan of 1630 demonstrates the importance attached to the depht levels of various points of the basin (approximately 1.83 m.). A detail of the area surrounding the Molo Vecchio
