The Torre dei Greci

The defense tower is situated in the middle of the Molo and is employed as a lighthouse, first with wood-burning fire and then with oil lamps. The oil is supplied by the Salvatores portus et moduli (the harbour curators) whose seat is right at the tip of the dock.

The image (from a document of the State Archive, 1371) recalls a type of observation and signal tower which probably corresponds to the one used for the medieval lantern (then developed in the 16th century).
