The dock as the tipo of the iceberg
Building a dock on the open sea is a mammoth task, especially when there are no machines to replace tasks done by people. The excavations and the rocks carriages are facilitated by the nearby quarries which in any case require the loading on a barge, the carriage and the unloading in the right point.
A section of the "new" Molo in the project of Ansaldo de Mari (1635). The old Molo, whose construction began 4 centuries before, is not so different in the conception.
