From wall to dock

In the years around the start of the 20th century, the old Molo becomes the heart of the harbour modernisation. The railway is extended and, to do so, the Mandraccio (the first pre-Roman landing place) is covered since it is unsuitable for big ships. The southern part of the Molo is enlarged with docks connected at the promontory.

The comparaison between the two maps (1886 and 1906) shows the results of the big expansion work of the old Molo, the arrival of the railways and the construction of large warehouses (then called "del cotone")
