The workshop for the gas production needed a center with precise characteristics: at least three hundred meters distance from the inhabited area, great availability of water and besides proximity of the roads from which the coal restocking came. A ground was chosen in the proximities of Porta Nuova, at the time out of town, and the project was entrusted to architect Charles Gabelli and to engineer Gautier. After the agreements with the Town hall for the laying of the pipings underground, the construction of the gas workshop started, and it was made up of a main office building, the instant available personnel's houses, the fuel storerooms and some useful machinery for the distillation of gas from coal.
