When the bishop of Milan, San Carlo Borromeo vowed to walk to the city where the shroud resided in exchange for the liberation from the plague of 1576, Emanuele Filiberto I, a skilled diplomat, wanted to bring the relic to the new capital, saving him the tiring path . On 11 October 1578, the Holy Shroud was exposed for the first time on the occasion of the arrival of the bishop. The next day it was exhibited in Piazza Castello, for all citizens.
