The fire

On Friday 11 April 1997 around 11:30 pm an alarm came to the Fire Brigade: a terrible fire was devouring the Guarini Chapel. To extinguish it, about 150 firefighters were employed with about twenty means of support. The Shroud was not directly involved because fortunately, to allow the restoration of the Chapel, it had been temporarily transferred to the center of the Cathedral choir, protected by a specially built bulletproof and shatterproof crystal structure; if it were not so, the 1000 degrees reached by the fire would have reduced it to ash. The restoration works will only be completed on September 28th 2018.
