The building built around 1680 is articulated around a vast courtyard garnished on three sides by a double order of loggias supported by pairs of columns, to which one of the four arms of the stables connects to the Po. The scheme of the internal façade is taken up in the courtyard of the University, which however is a few decades later, from an intervention by Vittone.
The courtyard of the Royal Academy is in the background of an extraordinary cross-section of the Teatro Regio by Benedetto alfieri, from 1741. Here is the detail of the design preserved in the state archive.
