Basilica di Superga Torino

The cathedral was built as a gift from Vittorio Amedeo II to the Virgin Mary to thank her for protecting the Savoy during the war against France and King Luigi XIV. In the city, the people narrated that Amedeo II had gone to the top of the hill and after he had seen the level ground and the position of his army, he asked the Holy Mary's protection , swearing that if he won , he would build a majestic church in her honor.
