The altarpiece of Defendente Ferrari

The second chapel of the right aisle is the only one that preserves the original decorative apparatus and paintings of the sixteenth century on the stories of the saints Orso, Crispino and Crispiniano protectors of the Compagnia dei Calzolai who commissioned it. The important altarpiece with the Madonna and Child in the center is a work of Martino Spanzotti and his atelier with the collaboration of Defendente Ferrari. When the chapel was modified in 1669-70, also the altarpiece was modified. The doors have been dismembered and the tablets obtained have been inserted into the stucco decoration of the walls, thus preserving the entire cycle of the stories of the saints. The restoration of 1998, has allowed to reconstruct the phases of production of the work and the changes occurred over the centuries.
