Parrocchia San Giovanni Battista Orbassano

The Battle of Marsaglia took place in Orbassano on 4th October 1693 and saw the French troops opposed to those of Vittorio Amedeo II. Louis XIV, not happy enough with the successes achieved in the "War of Devolution" in 1666 and in the "Dutch War of 1672, wanted to extend his sovereignty to the territories of the Rhine Valley, appealing to unresolved paragraphs of the Treaties of Westphalia, of the Pyrenees and of Nijmegen. The expansionist ambitions of the Sun King provoked the reaction of the European states which, on the initiative of William of Orange, formed in 1686 the "League of Augusta" against France. The Germanic Empire, England, Spain, Holland and some minor States joined the League, including the Piedmont of Vittorio Amedeo II.
