A complete restoration by Alfredo D'Andrade was imposed because of the serious deterioration of the complex at the end of 1800. D'Andrade, who had carried out many restorations in Liguria and Piedmont, was a follower of Viollet le Duc and of the theories of analogical restoration, which aims at completing and rebuilding degraded parts. To recover the medieval image of the building, plasters were removed from the factory buildings added in later periods, but above all an entrance with a monumental staircase facing the sea was opened, for the Sala delle Compere on the first floor. This meant removing the ancient sacristy of the Banco, but above all changing the orientation of the building, cutting it off from the city, and opening it to the port area.
