A public building with many functions, also a prison
Marco Polo was kept in the dungeons of the palace for about a year after being captured in 1298 during the naval battle of Curzola: here he dictated to Rustichello da Pisa "The Travels of Marco Polo. The event is commemorated by a plaque on the north façade, inaugurated on October 12, 1926.
A crowd gathered for the affixation of the plaque (October 12, 1926) reading: “Marco Polo / dictated in Genoa / The Travels of Marco Polo / on Columbus day / Genoa and Venice /placed it”.
