A urban sign beyond the walls
The role of the painted façade of the Palace clearly emerges in this engraving showing the "front of the port" as it appeared to those who berthed at the docks: with the city separated from the walls, but the Palace in the front line with the windows of the Sala delle Compere overlooking the ships.
