An ancient form of worship

The use of the healing key for rabies was one of the most ancient practices carried out in Santo Stefano dating back to the pre-roman traditions until the first decades of the twentieth century. The believers, wayfarers, and inhabitants of the area used to go to this church to treat the wounds inflicted by rabid dogs. A red-hot key made incandescent inside the crypt was placed on the infected skin with the aim to heal the wound.

The key used by San Pietro and delivered to Sant'Umberto was the first key able to heal rabies. This is the representation of the key of Sant'Umberto.
