The Battle of Staffarda

The Battle of Staffarda was one of the bloodiest events of the conflict that Louis XIV began against Vittorio Amedeo II, who had allied himself with the Spaniards and the Germans of the empire to escape the impositions of France. In the summer of 1690 the French troops encamped after the passage of the Alps had 12,000 men commanded by General Catinat. Vittorio Amedeo, instead of waiting for reinforcements, attacked with higher forces but was defeated heavily, leaving over 4000 soldiers on the field, against just over 1000 of the French. The area was devastated by assaults, which did not spare the abbey complex.
