Castle of Miraflores

In 1585, Charles Emmanuel I of Savoy built the Castle of Miraflores for his eighteen-year-old wife Catherine of Habsburg, second daughter of Filippo II of Spain. This became the name of the park, which in Spanish means "look at the flowers", in reference to the fantastic natural scenery and landscape, on which the Piedmontese palace faced. The Sangone was diverted to create a large garden, but there was a violent flood and the stream came under the walls and ruined them.
