In the early 1900s, 6 movie theaters were active in via Roma. In 1905, the Cinematofono opened in via Roma inside the Caffé Ristorante della Borsa, where "projections of bright new paintings and elegant buffet services" took place. According to city critics, since 1908 it has become the Cinematographer of the Stock Exchange, "beloved by the Turin people and frequented by an elegant audience". It was also much loved by intellectuals who founded a kind of arthouse cinema in 1928. The animator was the literary critic and screenwriter Giacomo De Benedetti, but the painters Casorati and Menzio as well as the industrialist and patron Riccardo Gualino (who some time later founded Lux) participated in the venture.
