The new city

The "new city" is inaugurated on the occasion of the entry into Turin of Cristina of France who was married to the heir of the duchy, Vittorio Amedeo. A period of pro-French alliances begun and also a phase of intense promotion of building activities with new edicts since 1621. The edict of '46 of the regent Duchess Cristina is fundamental for the definition of the urban history of the city: the construction of a large Piazza Reale (now Piazza S. Carlo), the fulcrum of the expansion. It was determined and establishes that "the façades of the houses around this square should be built with the same design and architecture".
