New Architectures for Via Roma

For the design of the façades, a hybrid style is imposed to conform to the seventeenth-century style of Piazza San Carlo. This imposition provokes the negative reaction of the exponents of the modern movement. For the 2nd stretch of via Roma, in 1933 new ideas were implemented and the Municipality later developed a plan with the advice of the official architect of the regime, Marcello Piacentini. The intervention, completed in '37, eliminated all pre-existence and proposes rationalist buildings. The width of the street is widened, determined by the 2 churches in Piazza San Carlo. On the back of the churches you can see the plan of the project.
