Since 1882, the City Council has nominated a Commission to take care of the restructuring of the historic center and set three possible directives for intervention: the demolition of some blocks to create squares and flowerbeds, the enlargement of certain streets and the demolition of the city's fabric to give life to new diagonal roads. On March 18, 1885, the City Council approved the Town Building Regulatory Plan for the Restructuring of the City, which also affects the Santa Croce block and pushes for the movement of the Mauritian Hospital.
