Guard of the guards

In the square and in Via Palazzo di Città, between small porticoes, small sloping roofs are still visible, called "paraguardie". They were built to repair the soldiers who were on the side of the road on the path that connected the Town Hall to Piazza Castello and Palazzo Reale. In later times they also sheltered merchants who brought their banquets of vegetables and aromatic herbs to the square.

The paraguardie offered shelter to sentinel soldiers and merchants
