On 22 November 2004, the candidate for president Viktor Yushchenko contested the election result, which saw former President Leonid Kuchma and Viktor Yanukovych in the lead. Following the falsification of the election results, a huge orange-colored crowd, the symbol of Yushchenko’s party, gathered in the square and for weeks a campaign of protests and acts of civil disobedience was carried out to hold new elections. Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians from every city came to Kyiv in support of the president, the victim of the fraud. As a result of the protests, the Supreme Court invalidated the results and the December 26, 2004 election saw Viktor Yushchenko come out as the winner with 52% of the votes.
