The first victorious Savoy king

The first Savoy king Victor Amadeus II, following the years of war and the violent siege of Turin in 1706, where he managed to defeat the French army, faced the reorganization of the state and that of the capital. His policy tends to strengthen the authority of absolute sovereign, through the centralization of powers over the nobility, the reorganization of the army and also a redesign of the city that can express the new political thinking. Just from the Military Quarters, a new gate to the west and at the same time modern barracks, the third expansion of Turin begins, taking advantage of the area already acquired with the construction of the new fortified walls for the siege of 1706.

The painting, commissioned by Prince Eugene who had brought help to his cousin Vittorio Amedeo to free Turin from the siege of the French, shows the walls completed and the space still free next to the citadel. In the painting, the south is at the top.
