With the imperial decree of December 27, 1807 it was decided to replace the bridge with a more modern one. The works were carried out by the French engineer Charles Mallet and the Piedmontese Pellegrini on a project by Claude La Ramée Pertinchamp, the laying of the first stone took place on November 22nd 1810 and the works ended in 1813. At the end of the French occupation, it was proposed to bring it down, but King Vittorio Emanuele I was against this idea. The bridge was then named after him.
