The growing importance of the city of Turin as the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia and the progressive expansion of the first urban nucleus with the construction of the district of Po (now Via Po) determined the importance of crossing the Po. Thus between 1406 and 1411 the bridge was built, designed by Antonio Becchio di Villanova, a monk. However, the bridge was inappropriate to bear the flooding of the river, and on 3 September 1706 a flood demolished the sixth pile starting from the city and four of the thirteen arches collapsed. They were replaced by wooden beams.
