The proximity to the gate of Serravalle
As mentioned, the foundation of the headquarters of the Doria family begins when the city walls are still those of the end of the Thousand. The land was located near the gate of Serravalle, but, they were outside and allowed the Doria to maintain a strategic position. However, in a few years, the headquarters was included in the new walls and the family decided to redesign the square in a more unified style.
The picture (google maps) illustrates the zone of San Matteo and in yellow the position of the gate of Serravalle that gone in disused with the extension of the walls in 1150.
