The priest of the gallows

San Giuseppe Cafasso accompanied as many as 57 condemned to death from prisons to the gallows and encouraged their conversion and comforted them. His mission took place in the Senatorial prisons of Via Corte d'Appello, where he remained for the whole night talking with the condemned. He brought the prisoners cigars and snuff, to prevent them sniff the lime scraped from the walls, having nothing else. The "priest of the gallows" used to call the condemned "gentlemen" and his "hanged saints", showing a great spirit of mercy.
