The current appearance of Piazza Castello is the product of a unified design based on the arcades. Small shops beneath the arcades have characterised the stretch between Via Roma and Via Po for the past 200 years. In the 1930s a structure made of iron and glass was placed between the columns to close the gaps in the arcades. The shops were renovated and standardised in 2005, during the embellishment works carried out in the city for the Winter Olympics.
