The first lighting in the city
In 1847 Carlo Alberto turned on the gas lamps on each column inaugurating the new gate that separates Piazzetta Reale. It is the first permanent public lighting of the city only for a few years.
An engraving of the illustrated world presents a smoked crowd, where it is not clear if they applauds or expels the vapors of the luminary produced.
