The layout of the facades set by Vitozzi at the end of '500 for the square was pursued in the following centuries, emphasizing what will become a strong feature of the city: a compositional concept that subordinates the single building to the urban scale of the interventions. The western front of the square undergoes several transformations: in the '700 the block of the church of San Lorenzo was completed, also adapting this facade to the overall design. In the second half of the 20th century, the last transformation takes place that unifies the front and the arcades between Via Roma and Via Po, according to the original model.
